Velocity is no way to compare success of your Scrum Teams!

Scrum is about delivering potentially releasable Product Increments every Sprint. Not about reaching a certain Velocity consistently. You can have the best Velocity in the company. But this means nothing if you don’t deliver valuable products.

Velocity can help a team to plan their work. It’s a practice complementary to Scrum that can have added value. Velocity has no value if you use it to compare teams. There are other ways to assess teams. Things, like:

  • Is the team creating a “Done” Increment every Sprint?

  • Are they engaged with stakeholders?

  • Do the stakeholders love their products?

  • Is a team seeking ways to improve?

  • Is the team motivated and working together?

  • Is the team meeting their goals?

  • Is the team creating value?

I understand the desire to compare the work of the teams. But why would you compare teams on output, on velocity? The outcome is far more important.
